Instrument supplies and equipment
Preparing for middle school
Flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone and percussion kits are not usually provided in middle school. If your family cannot afford an instrument, AAPS will continue to provide an instrument to you. Below are the brands that area teachers recommend. (Please do not buy a different brand without contacting me. Recently, a lot of poor quality instruments have flooded the market. These instruments can be difficult to play, impossible to repair and potentially contain lead).
· Flutes: Yamaha, Gemeinhardt, Dean, Jupiter, not Bundy
· Clarinets: Yamaha, Selmer, Buffet, Woodwind, Vito, Bundy
· Oboes: Fox Renard, Selmer, but are usually provided by Ann Arbor Public Schools
· Saxes: Yamaha, Jupiter, Conn, Keilwerth, Vito. Selmer okay, but not the “Selmer Bundy II”
· Trumpets (if buying new, do not buy a cornet): Yamaha, Bach, Getzen, Conn, Holton
· French horns: Holton, Conn, Yamaha
· Trombones: Holton, Bach, Yamaha, Conn, Olds
· Baritones, euphoniums, tubas: are provided by Ann Arbor Public Schools
·Percussion kits: Yamaha, Pearl, Tama, Percussion Plus. These include a snare drum or practice pad, and a set of student bells. You also need the AAPS required sticks and mallets which include: stick bag with Vic Firth SD1 snare sticks, Encore 92R or Vic Firth M132 xylophone mallets and Mike Balter 91R or Vic Firth 133 marimba mallets. Some schools also require timpani mallets.
· Violin: Hoffman (Prelude, Etude, Maestro, Amadeus models), Fisher
· Violas and cello are provided by AAPS
*String players must learn their SIZE from their teacher before shopping for new, used or rental. It is important to get the correct size. An instrument that is too large can cause poor playing position and will impede progress. Get sized by your 5th grade teacher before you shop.
